NYLON - PC VIOLENCE/SUSPECT
Between The Reatards and his prolific (albeit short-lived) run on Matador Records, Jay Reatard took a foray into the bizarre. Lost Sounds, for example, frequently borrowed from black metal and darkwave while Nervous Patterns tapped synth-punk pioneers Suicide and the Screamers. Even Angry Angles, his last full band project before his illustrious solo career, frequently flirted with the power pop stylings of groups like The Nerves.
On PC VIOLENCE/SUSPECT, the Asbury Park, New Jersey quartet Nylon takes their cues from Mr. Reatard. Distinctly bubblier than their troubled counterpart, they deliver two earworm laden garage rock tracks with a modern slacker sheen. “PC VIOLENCE” starts things off skronky with a virtuoso drum performance featuring god’s favorite instrument, the cowbell. At a minute and twenty eight seconds total, it’s a short jaunt delivered with a knowing wink and a sardonic smile.
Its counterpart, “SUSPECT”, is the beefier of the two songs. Quintessentially sunny, its bouncy riffs and snappy chorus wouldn’t feel out of place on Watch Me Fall. Terse drums support this further, accentuating the off kilter vocals to create an easy groove to bop along to. More direct than “PC VIOLENCE”, the latter serves as a compliment to the more discordant former. With just two tracks, Nylon makes the most of it.
