Charcuterie - Forensically Undetectable Waste
Grindcore is currently going the way of shoegaze. A sudden explosion in popularity following the cross-genre success of acts like Weekend Nachos, Magrudergrind, and Nails saw its stock rise exponentially. Quick cash-ins followed through the painfully dull and dramatically uninspired shlock of acts like Escuela Grind (and their horrendous band name) before trickling down to local scenes where half-baked fight riffs and mid tempo stomping reign supreme. While the genre may be more popular than ever, its overall quality, themes, and ethos by its sudden oversaturation. To put it bluntly, grindcore is suffering from its own success.
There are always diamonds in the rough, however. Among a sea of frenzied trend-hoppers who quit their screamo bands after hearing Unsilent Death, Philadelphia’s own goregrind connoisseurs Charcuterie are a breath of rank, putrid air. Clocking in at a whopping seven minutes, their half of the split with Japanese goregrinders Pharmacist, Forensically Undetectable Waste, is six tracks of no-frills grindcore without so much as a hint of a hardcore riff. Snares ping, vocals squelch, and samples abound as these masters of the macabre show what it’s all about. If you’re tired of grindcore that barely blasts, then it’s time to get the prosciutto and give Charcuterie a chance.
